Pride in My Period

As we move from the Menstrual Health Month towards Pride Month 2020, which commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, as well as the accomplishments of LGBTQ+ individuals, join us for an engaging discussion on the intersectionality of the two issues, deepdiving into inclusivity during periods. 

Moderated by Pragya Roy, a feminist activist and the content editor at Feminism In India, the session will have Durga Gawde, Sculptor, Educator, Activist and India's first performing drag king and Vyjayanti Vasanta Mogli, Transgender RTI Activist & Co-founder, Queer Swabhimana Yatra (QSY) & Telangana Hijra Intersex Transgender Samiti (THITS) as our esteemed speakers discussing 

- Inclusivity and intersectionality of periods - Digging deeper into the slogan 'Not all who menstruate are women and not all women menstruate’ - Experiences, angst, mental/physical health, shame, perspective of transgender people on/due to periods  - Understanding the politics of periods, how can menstrual health practitioners be more inclusive

About the Speakers

Durga Gawde, Sculptor, Educator, Activist and India's first performing drag king (b.1993) graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from The Rhode Island School of Design(RISD) in 2015. Teaching fellow with Urbanframe, an organisation run out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT), Cambridge and has also been a visiting faculty member at ISDI Parson's, Mumbai. Durga has given various talks and lectures throughout the country about art, design, technology and identity. Being a genderfluid person, Durga felt compelled to be an activist and educate the masses about the presence of various non-binary identities in the world. Durga's work, thoughts and intentions have been published in numerous publications like  Art India, Architectural Digest, Vogue, GQ, Femina, Harper's Bazzar, Elle Decor, Homegrown to name a few. Durga was part of the Grazia magazine ‘Cool list 2018’, and on the digital cover of Vogue India Sept 2019. Fashion is expression, and gender expression is a big part of Durga's life. Durga featured with the designer label 'Bobo Calcutta' in Lakme fashion week, 2018. Durga started to experiment with gender identity through drag and performance art. Their drag alter ego is called 'Shakti' and is the first performing drag king in India. Durga's practice uses various mediums to express and inspire but the string that binds all that they do is being true to oneself and working from a place of love.

Vyjayanti Vasanta Mogli has worn quite a few different hats across the corporate and the social development sectors ranging from training design and delivery to Employee Engagament. Vyjayanti's preferred name is Vyjayanti and pronouns are she, her and her's.  She is a transgender human rights and RTI activist precipitating Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Courts and the Supreme Court & works very closely & probono with law & policy think tanks viz. Alternative Law Forum (ALF) and Centre for Law & Policy Research (CLPR).  Just this month, she filed a PIL in the High Court of Telangana which resulted in the High Court ordering the Telangana government to supply free medicines & rations to all transgender persons in Telangana regardless of their possession or otherwise of ration cards.  In January 2020, she challenged the constitutionality and the structural monstrosities of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2020 in the Supreme Court.  In February 2018, she got the archaic, draconian & regressive Telangana Eunuchs Acts 1329F stayed and suspended by the Telangana High Court.  Along with her other transgender friends, she happens to a co-founder of the Telangana Hijra Intersex Transgender Samiti (THITS), Queer Swabhimana Yatra (QSY), Telangana Queeraangana (TQ) and Telananga Transaangana (TT), all of which are unfunded people's collectives of queer & transgender persons
